How To Travel on a Plane With Your Electric Scooter

Electric Scooters are now a popular eco-friendly vehicle in the U.S. They could be a sweat helper whether you use it commuting or running errands. People are used to taking it with them at all times, and riding an e-scooter can be a great convenience at your destination. So you might wonder how to travel on a plane with your electric scooter.

Can you take your electric scooter on a plane?

The answer is generally no, but still some exceptions, various regions of airlines’ aviation rules are different, some allowing for lithium-ion batteries to carry no more than 100wh and some can even carry up to 160wh. Therefore one of the most important things you need to check is your maximum battery capacity should be below 160wh.

U.S. FAA Regulations on Electric Scooters

Under U.S. and international regulations, Electric scooters are not explicitly banned from being carried on planes, so they may be carried in checked or carry-on baggage like other portable electronic devices, provided that:

Airline approval is required. Any lithium-ion battery over 100 watt-hours (Wh) requires airline approval.  * Airlines may choose not to accept these devices at all or may restrict them to carry-on baggage.

Devices with a lithium-ion battery capacity of more than 160 watt-hours (Wh) are prohibited as carry-on or checked baggage.

Therefore, please contact your airline 48 hours before your trip to find out if they accept these recreational vehicles as carry-on or checked baggage.

And you need to contact your airline to provide your proper documentation to receive permission to carry on your e-scooter, and mostly, you will have to remove your battery before handing over your e-scooter to the airline as checked baggage before departure

International Airline

Devices, for example, phones, laptops, tablet batteries or anything equipped with lithium-ion batteries have strict limitations, which are regulated by International Air Transport Association (IATA).  The different international airlines have various rules and restrictions, so it’s better to contact their official crew for consultation. Otherwise, they have the right to impound your scooter.

Generally, there are  the following regarding e-scooter and its battery:

  • If your battery capacity is less than 100 Wh, you have two options for carrying on: direct carry-on or taking cabin transport after security screening.

  • Before checking in or carrying a battery with a capacity between 100 to 160 kWh, you must consult the airline.

  • When the battery capacity exceeds 160 kWh, most electrical appliances (including electric scooters) must be prohibited from taking on plane.

Summary

Carrying electric scooters on the plane is generally not allowed, but some airlines will allow the battery to be carried separately from the scooter, provided that the capacity of the battery meets the minimum capacity specified by the airline. To be on the safe side, it is best to consult the airline you are flying with and understand the battery parameters of your electric scooter before departure.

If your airline does not allow you to take on your e-scooter after consultation, then you could choose to rent one and continue exploring your destination with ease.
